Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

The following issues are notable..
* First of all there is no definition for what a Desktop Environment is.. That should be there..
" A Desktop Environment is a graphical server which renders the users the graphical user interface of any operating system. Every desktop environment has its own file manager, icons, windows and other tools. Three of the famous desktop environments in the open source world are GNOME (GNU Network Object Model Environment) , KDE (K Desktop Environment) and Xfce."
I think this definition is to be fit in there..

* Under "Installing KDE Desktop", there is procedure to install "kubuntu-desktop" via synaptic manager.. but there is no procedure to do it from terminal.. it should be in there definitely..
* the same holds good for "Installing Xfce Desktop" section also..

Not against a definition of desktop environment but this definition is innaccurate and we should avoid the use of the word server. A "desktop environment provides a standardised set of widgets and a window manager" would be simpler. Generic definitions of DE tend to err on the side of covering everything from GUI to applications - there are still a number of us who prefer to use only a window manager.

I can see why you would want to include a command line version, however it is best that we stick to the use of synaptic for cohesion across the documentation. Such a link would arguably be more useful in the server guide or in reference to alternate installs.

These descriptions of what a "desktop environment" is all sound a bit technical for our serious use base. The word "widget" should certainly never appear in our documentation!

OK, do you suggest we leave it as is?

I have as much authority as the Pope. I just don’t have as many people who believe it.

I'm happy that this section doesn't need to be patched.

There's the issue of referring to the use of Synaptic to install the meta packages. We should link to "Add Applications" where generic instructions can be found, rather than relying on one specific installation method.

Agreed Phil, in this case Add/Remove doesn't (I may stand to be corrected but I couldn't see it) offer a meta package for KDE installation.

Thanks for the review Vignesh. The explanation you've provided of a "desktop environment" is a bit over technical, but I think I understand the concern you're raising and have added an introductory paragraph to the -karmic branch to address this.

As for the other issue, the document now uses an apt link to install these packages, and this is the current way that we specify installing packages.
