Heya, can you attach the video? or what specific codec type it is?

Both create screen shot and create screen shot gallery are working fine here.

10.10.

ahh! it seems that is the problem, when playing the "video codec=N/A"
sound is dolby digital and the copy was done on a professional editing
suite by a friend that is no longer able to use the facility.
The file is a .VOB and was a copy from a VHS which in turn was a copy of
35mm film Im afraid im not able to send a copy of the video as its too
big and as yet i cant copy a small part of it because the usual video
editors wont read it despite it playing perfectly in MoviePlayer.

any clues as to how to find out what codec it is?

Many thanks for the reply anyway.
Sean

Does the video play in VLC?

if it does VLC has a codec information panel.

If we can figure out the video codec then I think we can test with other videos and go further upstream :)

Right that works
problem video has the following-

>Stream 0
Type: Video
Codec: MPEG-1/2 Video (mpgv)
Resolution: 352x576
Frame rate: 50
>Stream 1
Type: Audio
Codec: A52 Audio (aka AC3) (a52 )
Channels: Stereo
Sample rate: 48000 Hz
Bitrate: 224 kb/s

then its 5 streams of subtitle:-Codec: (cc1 )

can take screen shots in VTS so kind of job done
if i can split the file Ill send you a bit
