Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem

In a terminal, I run:

totem 00.mp4 01.mp4 02.mp4 03.mp4 04.mp4 05.mp4 06.mp4 07.mp4 08.mp4 09.mp4 10.mp4 11.mp4 12.mp4 13.mp4 14.mp4 15.mp4 16.mp4 17.mp4 18.mp4 19.mp4

to play 20 video files one after the other. I would expect them to be played in the order listed on the command line, but they're not. I see a playlist on the right of the totem window listing the files in the order they are actually played, which is not usually the same as the order I listed on the command line.

The order changes slightly each time. Currently I'm getting 00, 01, 02, 03, 07 thru' 15, 17, 18, 19, 04, 16, 05, 06.
Sometimes the order is completely correct, but mostly it isn't.

I just copied a bunch of video files from a camera memory stick, selected them in nautilus, right-clicked and selected "Open with Movie Player" and the same problem happened.

Checking the running processes, I see:

totem /home/chris/Pictures/SDC13156.MP4 /home/chris/Pictures/SDC13157.MP4 /home/chris/Pictures/SDC13158.MP4 /home/chris/Pictures/SDC13159.MP4 /home/chris/Pictures/SDC13160.MP4 /home/chris/Pictures/SDC13161.MP4 /home/chris/Pictures/SDC13162.MP4 /home/chris/Pictures/SDC13163.MP4 /home/chris/Pictures/SDC13164.MP4

ie. they're listed in numerical order. But in the totem application, they're all jumbled up, and play out of order.

So this bug doesn't only affect people using the command line, but also people using nautilus.

I can also confirm this behavior from opening files in Nautilus. I snooped the Totem source code but I didn't see anything suspicious: maybe this is a bad interaction with glib or GTK and totem?

Can we backport the fix?

Are you sure this is fixed? I am on Natty and totem version is 2.32.0-0ubuntu10 and still experiencing the problem.

I also have 2.32.0-0ubuntu10 and it certainly seems fixed to me.

I run:
  totem *.MP4
and the playlist in the right-hand side panel is in the correct order,
whereas it didn't used to be.

It's definitely not fixed here.
On top of having files in random order, certain files do not even appear!
