Bug Description

After assigning volume up, volume down, and mute buttons on my laptop, I noticed that the
designated mute button sometimes does not restore previous volume settings after "unmuting".
This ill-effect does not happen all the time??? Occassionally, when I mute the system,
another press of the same button does not restore the volume to its previous setting.
Instead, the volume is reactivated to the bare minimum, which forces the user to manually set
it back up.

oes it happen only with the keybindings, or also with the applet ?

Here's what I've discovered: After mapping/binding the multmedia vol and mute keys to my keyboard,
the bound mute/unmute button does not always (sometimes it works) restore the volume to the pre-mute
level. I must raise it from the minimum. The applet is not integrated with the keybinding. After
troubleshooting both, the mute/unmute feature of the applet is not responding at all to my request for
mute/unmute. I've also noticed that muting with my "bound" key is not reflected in the applet icon
displaying muted. There appears to be a conflict between my bound buttons and the applet...there's a
bug with integration. Basically, I should be able to mute the sound with the "bound" hardware button
and unmute it next with the applet...if need be. Those 2 methods should be working together. They
are not.

could you describe an easy way to get the issue ?

Here's how discovered the issue:
1) Set up keyboard shortcuts on my laptop (Gateway 7405GX AMD64); I used the 3 multimedia volume
buttons (up, down, mute) above my laptop's standard keyboard
2) Start Ubuntu and put a music CD in the optical drive
3) Press the newly-bound mute button; it should mute; press the button again to restore the music
4) Repeat step 3 numerous times; also, adjust the volume level +/- occasionally
The mute button "should" fail to unmute properly after competing the above steps. It doesn't produce
this bug every time, so it's difficult to identify/report.
Also, watch the speaker icon applet...it does not show that sound is muted when it should from pressig
the "bound" multimedia keys.

Here's an update to this bug:
The applet in the panel is now "syncing" somewhat with the mapped multimedia keys...the applet shows
muted status when I press the assigned "mute" button on my keyboard. However, the mute button
continues to mute improperly by setting the volume all the way to minimum-instead of just muting
it "in place" at its current level. This seems tied directly to bug#9399. To see this issue, press a
user-assigned multimedia key for mute, then wait for over 5 seconds and press it again to try to
unmute it. On my AMD64 laptop, the sound is forced all the way to minimum (instead of muting). This
occurs if I wait for more than a few seconds to press it.

Here's probably the same bug identified in the Gnome bugzilla as Bug 161629. I hope this helps.

right, that's probably this upstream bug, thanks

I'l like to point out that on my Dell this happens using the media keys only,
and it happens after the volume has been muted for about 30secs or more. It is
possible that some gconf sync is going on and it's saving the state of the
volume at 0, so when unmuting it is unmuted to 0.

The panel applet and other places do not produce such an issue.

It seems that lof of things have changed in this area in the last release.

Do you still have this bug ?

Since I had a couple of problems with Dapper Flt 6 on
this laptop, please wait until the next Flt or Beta
for my update to this problem (hopefully it's been
fixed). I'll be sure to test this volume problem on
the next Dapper update. Thanks.

Hello. From what I remember about using Dapper on
this laptop, this bug report can be closed. (I sold
this low quality Gateway 7405GX laptop.) Thanks.
