Merge lp:~alexwolf/stellarium/dso-textures into lp:stellarium

In this branch was added textures for DSO which courtesy granted by Oleg Bryzgalov and Andrey Kuznetsov for Stellarium under Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported license.

There is a "little" problem - it's not clear whether CC-BY 3.0 is compatible with the GNU GPL. The gnu.org FAQ on license compatibility explicitly says that CC-BY 2.0 is incompatible:

I suggest a "scouting mission": to other similar projects to find out what they use, and to the FSF, to ask about version 3 compatibility in this specific use case. Asking the image authors for a different license is another option, but we need to find out first what are our/their options. :)

I am not sure that we need to package extra nebula textures into the main source. I have a package of extra nebula that don't need any licence always available and regularly add to it as we take more photos. However I have found that once you get over 100 reasonable HD photos the loading is considerably slowed down. I belong to a group of dedicated astro photographers that operate from a very dark site that are always photographing unusual objects.

Further, If we ever get the DSS images sorted out the need for specific nebula textures will diminish.

I suggest that the extras be assembled into a package that can be distributed as an addon.

Well... CC-BY 3.0 is permissive free license and good for content [1] and DSFG-compatible for Debian ([2] + some discussion [3]). Also we already use image under CC-BY-SA 3.0 within Stellarium.

I'm added non-HD images (low-res) for DSO for compatibility with old computers.

Right now we don't have working DSS-layer for Stellarium and users frequently asked me about textures for DSO. :(

I'm added only low-res textures - maximal size is 512x512 for multiple DSO's per texture. Of course, we need also the additional packages with mid-res and high-res textures for DSO on our wiki.

The DSS project is dead, and we have no server to hold the data. Both Fabian and Matthew have donated funds, that could in theory be used for a cloud server, but as they are off in their own little worlds now, that isn't an option (and probably should be treated as a seperate blueprint).

People like to see the images.Performance may be a concern, but, that the metadata is loaded doesn't mean the images are; they should be loaded until they are actually viewable.

I have checked out the new nebulae
We already have available n5139, n281 and n891 at better resolution and quite free as they are mine.

I have only checked the n7331 from the new batch. Who did the plate solve. It is woeful.
I will need to check them all out.

Check of new nebulae

n5982, n3190, n2903, n1333 are close enough (but not perfect)
n7129, n7023, n6960, n6543, n4490, n3718 are close (one or more stars aligned but many some distance out)
n7331, n7318 not even close
n891, n5139, n281 not checked as I have my own far superior textures

OK. Barry, can you update and calibrate textures for DSO? We need add low resolution textures for default package and, if you can, of course, middle and high resolution for downloadable packages.

If you need I can ask Russian and Ukrainian astrophotographers give photos for us.

I can fix the ones that are out OK but it will take some time as my plate solver needs won't work with those images because I don't have the centre, size or angle. I will need to do them by hand by moving the corners bit by bit. Matthew wrote a program that allowed this to be done in real time but I don't have it anymore, besides it only worked with version 0.8.1 (I think). To do this I need background stars and it appears that the textures have had the background stars removed.

I can get photos of any objects that are visible from Wiruna where I have an astrophotography setup but we only go there at new moon weekends and if it is cloudy it can be a washout. It takes about 3 hrs to get a reasonable photo so we usually don't get more than two over a weekend.
