Bug Description

Binary package hint: indicator-me

We now have Ubuntu One in the messaging menu, so there is no need to have it also in the me menu.

Thanks!

Am I the only one who finds that decision more than a little baffling? As an online storage provider Ubuntu one doesn't really belong in either the Me Menu (it isn't strictly related to the end users online presence or status) or the Messaging Menu (it isn't related to messaging). I suppose one could make an argument for Ubuntu One's inclusion within the Me Menu on the grounds that it relates to ones online data presence, but I can't 'retcon' a valid reason for moving it to the Messaging Menu.

Personally, I think it's time to admit that Ubuntu One (and perhaps other online storage providers such as dropbox and box.net) deserve their own indicator for online storage/transfers.

I thought the same thing at first, UbuntuOne isn't the kind of messaging service as we might be used to. However, the reason we believe it belongs in the messaging menu is UbuntuOne now sends messages to users. For example, if you have a new share available for your device to subscribe to, it will get an entry in the messaging menu. This allows the user to have time to review their new shares and decide to subscribe or not at their leisure.

@KenVanDine That does somewhat justify moving the Ubuntu One entry into the Messaging Menu. Although it's still a little odd, as the messages relate to storage as opposed to communication. I still think that cloud storage is worthy of its own unifying indicator akin to the messaging menu. What exactly was the justification for NOT having (or removing if I recall correctly) an Ubuntu One indicator icon in the first place?

There wasn't a U1 indicator before, back in Jaunty there was a notification area status icon that wasn't very useful. Remember Ubuntu One isn't just about storage, it is more than that already and over time I am sure it will grow.

The current indicator isn't necessarily "storage", think of it more like a contact has shared a folder with you. You see that pending share from the contact in the messaging menu. Messaging is the best fit we have right now for it.

Ah! That *must* be what I was thinking of then.

Noted. But this doesn't change the fact, that at the heart of UbuntuOne is data. I welcome tighter integration between Ubuntu and UbuntuOne (although I'd like to see this opened up to other data providers as well) where appropriate, but lets not forget those of us who use UbuntuOne primarily for file storage 'ey. ;-)

There is a proven use-case for an UbuntuOne indicator (hence Roman Yepishev's ubuntuone-indicator), as both a means of monitoring the status of file synchronisations and accessing preferences and shares. Using notify-osd for this is all well and good (it's certainly a very good way of drawing attention), but in my opinion an indicator is a better fit.

I can certainly see the logic in notifying the end-user of a new share(s) available via the messaging menu (although were there an official cloud/ubuntuone indicator, I would probably place such notifications there).

Kind Regards,
