Bug Description

Binary package hint: banshee

With the new monochrome icons, the banshee icon looks misplaced in the upper right part of the gnome-panel, please release a monochrome icon for banshee, so it better fits into the new desktop experience.

Adding a screenshot that shows how it looks today

***** NOTE *******
The icon has been added and the Banshee has been patched as well , but the notification area suffers from Bug #403135.
Where the banshee task is still open. Bug #403135 affects several apps. Not banshee alone. This has become easier to notice with the new light-themes

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.
Unfortunately, New panel greyscale icons cannot be added, as adding the greyscale icons will cause the monochrome icons to be displayed in the apps.
Some apps use the same icon for the panel notification area and the system menu.
So changing the icon to a greyscale icon will lead to the greyscale icon being displayed in the system menu.

Ideally, we would like the app to be patched to use a different icon name for the notification area.
Until then fixing it in Humanity is not possible.

-- I'm not sure how banshee does it. Does it already use a separate icon-name for the panel icon?

If not , Kindly, assign the affected app using the "also affects project". So that the issue is resolved in the app side first.
When this issue is resolved kindly mention the new icon name to be used. Thanks

I'm not sure how to check if it uses a separate icon of not. I'm not a programer, though I'd be delighted to help in anyway I can to resolve this bug. Is there anything I can do to help resolving this bug?

The icon Banshee uses for the notification area, .desktop file, and window icon is media-player-banshee, I think. What do you need in order for the monochrome icon to be implemented?

Vish (vish) wrote :

Ideally the notification area icon needs to be named separately.
For the Lucid cycle all the panel icons are named with -panel endings.
But for Lucid+1 , when the symbolic icon librvg work is done , the icons will be named as -symbolic.

So either, media-player-banshee-panel or media-player-banshee-symbolic as the icon name for the notification area would be good.

I've asked upstream what they think of a monochrome icon, I wanted to make sure we didn't lose the banshee identity in the process with a generic icon.

As it turns out Banshee is using a monochrome SVG as a placeholder in the grid view for when it can't find album art. I think this will end up looking great when scaled properly and put in the panel. I'm assigning this to Ken so he can hopefully find us an artist to finish this off for Ambiance/Radiance.

Something needs to be done so that icons in the system tray don't break the panel theme (or background images)!

well i have 1.6.0 from ppa Version: 1.6.0-1~hyper1~lucid1

It is monochrome but it doesn't look well the background is not
transperent so you have this white square with a gray bansee outline
in the middle.

Umm, with the Banshee (1.6.0-1) package; the banshee icon is uglier than ever. Now it has a grey box around it. Clearly the icon background is not transparent.

I would not consider this bug as "fixed"...

For people looking for a solution: you can always install the banshee indicator applet (as per instructions here http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2010/04/how-to-add-banshee-indicator-applet-in.html). This way, you do not only get a nice looking icon; you also now have banshee with the indicator applets. Maybe it should be the default to have the indicator applet extension installed and enabled, since we want as many as possible applications to migrate to the indicator applets?

Jack Deslippe (jdeslip) wrote :

I agree with Bram - the indicator applet extension should be default for Banshee in Lucid. The ordinary notification-area icon looks awful.

A temporarily work around would be to ship the banshee indicator applet as default for lucid.

psypher (psypher246) wrote :

installing the workaround removes a ton of required features: like being able to rate tracks, change shuffle and repeat settings, one click banshee maximise, scroll through tracks and being able to see the track details.

Yes the applet has a future, but only in 6 months in the next release. For the next 6 months I would prefer to not look at an ugly icon or have half of the features I use, every single time I run banshee, removed. I would not recommend having the applet as default if you need those features.

Where does the bug currently sit? Should I follow this thread or this one:https://bugs.launchpad.net/banshee/+bug/403135

@psypher. This bug is about creating a monochrome icon - not about the monochrome icon looking like crap. That bug however is fixed in upstream banshee - you can get the latest version of banshee from the ppa: https://launchpad.net/~banshee-team/+archive/banshee-daily
