Bug Description

Binary package hint: mplayer-nogui

When starting a video file in mplayer-nogui in karmic, there are several mysterious subtitle font errors.

Here they are;
New_Face failed. Maybe the font path is wrong. 1 ??% ??% ??,?% 0 0
Please supply the text font file (~/.mplayer/subfont.ttf).
subtitle font: load_sub_face failed.
New_Face failed. Maybe the font path is wrong.
Please supply the text font file (~/.mplayer/subfont.ttf).
subtitle font: load_sub_face failed.

The video file being played does not have subtitles.

Perhaps add a default font, or some kind of default configuration change?

please try starting with parameter -fontconfig.

does it still complain about a default font?

That does fix the problem. Perhaps it should be added to the default configuration?

in fact, I added a patch to enable it by default, so you'd have to explicitly disable it.

I need to investigate this further...

Daniel, for me fontconfig *is* enabled by default. Can you please attach both your files /etc/mplayer.conf and ~/.mplayer/config to this bug?

also, please confirm what *exact* version of the mplayer package you are currently testing.

I won't be able to get those until Monday, but I will say that I have not modified any config files for mplayer. So they should be the defaults.

Again with version, but it should be the latest, I've been applying updates every day or so.

looks like the wrong video output problem comes from /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf.

obviously the empty ~/.mplayer/config overrides the defaults from /etc/mplayer.conf with the built-in defaults from the binary.

I still wonder under which circumstance this 'empty' ~/.mplayer/config file is created...

hm. actually no. starting mplayer w/o ~/.mplayer/ directory will create it with the ~/.mplayer/config you've attached. Still, this doesn't override any defaults from /etc/mplayer.conf.

Which means that I cannot reproduce the symptoms you describe *at all*.

What's the point of marking a bug incomplete without asking for any extra information/testing?

I have the same problem with mplayer-nogui 2:1.0~rc3+svn20090426-1ubuntu9 on karmic amd64. The above error message and no fonts in the OSD texts. Adding -fontconfig fixes it. I already purged and reinstalled mplayer/mplayer-nogui and moved ~/.mplayer out of the way, none of which made any difference. This box was upgraded from jaunty and has had some other (svn) versions of mplayer installed in the past.
