Bug Description

MPlayer Movie Player, Gnome Player, VLC Media Player: trying to play videos in full screen gets my computer a). display the video file in the center of the maximized player window but with the same image dimensions as in normal size of the player window (x11 video driver), b). just freeze after launching full screen (xV video driver), c). freeze with blank screen ( xmga, dxr3, dfbmga, xvidix, xvmc video drivers), d). my picture flickering with my mouse moving very very slowly (with gl, gl2 drivers; this may be a result of some kind of system overload because of the full screen task).

Thank you for reporting a bug in Linux Mint. Unfortunately I do not have the necessary hardware to reproduce your problem. If anyone else can confirm this bug, please say so. Please check out the Linux Mint Forums, where there are many more people available to help out with diagnosing any problems you have. Please repost this in the forums, and put a link to it here, so I can track any further development. It is also exceptionally useful if you include the output of "inxi -F" when reporting hardware problems. You might also like to check out this article: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html This is a standard response, so it may not be entirely appropriate.

I have attached my inxi -F report file for a clearer hardware configuration picture of my system.

Here's my video drivers list screen shot in MPlayer video tab under Preferences. As I've already said in my initial report, none of these drivers would play my videos in full screen without the unusual results.

Well, the only thing I notice is that you have an ATI card, so make sure you've enabled the ATI drivers in Menu > Admin > Hardware Drivers.

It seems my ATI is up and running and, also, like I'm out of choices.

Mplayer and VLC would crash trying to play full screen video on Linux Mint 8 with an nvidia 7200GS using the NVIDIA version 96 proprietary driver. I tried several different sizes and formats in each player; same result.

Current workaround:
I changed the settings in VLC (tools > preferences > "video" tab > "output" pulldown > select "OpenGL video output"
and now just open all media with VLC. I have no mplayer workaround and have tried no other drivers.

inxi -F attached.

UPDATE:

Here's another fix that works better:

In VLC,
tools > preferences > "video" tab > uncheck "Accelerated video output (Overlay)"

Then X11 video output works, and other bugs and janky looking artifacts around fullscreen video and during the transition to and from fullscreen also go away.

Back at the point though, there seems to be something going on with the hardware acceleration on both NVIDIA and ATI cards using the closed drivers. This is probably an underlying issue with ubuntu?

I am trying to watch streaming video but it keeps closing mozilla every time I go to full screen. I can't get any bigger image than what shows up in the pop up window. Help please

Kansaboy: try changing the output mode, say, from x11 to xv.

I have this issue on both my Laptop and Desktop. Both are running Mint 9.0 and Nvidia Graphics cards (GT6600 for desktop and Geforce Go 7300).

Thanks.
