Bug Description

Since Ubuntu 8.10 (or 9.04), printer oki c5800 is supported and it's a good thing.

But I discover tow bugs (one is really important) :

- On big documents or when I print a lot of time the same page, I have to wait a lot of time before the document is printed. Sometime (when the quantity of information is to important), the document is not printed. I open the "system monitor" (in System > System monitor) to see how resources are used and processor is up to 100% during the printing process.

- I've discover a quality problem on color documents. First, colors are dark. Secondly, there are plenty of points on photos or colored area as if colors were compressed (like jpg compression). See the attached file to see what it look like. I try to use other ICM Color Profile or increase resolution value to 600x1200dpi, but the result is the same. Look at the attachment to understand the problem.

Which driver are you using for this printer?
Please run the following command on a terminal for some useful printing debugging information:
apport-collect -p cups 424546

Changed in ubuntu:
status: New → Incomplete

When I run the command, I get this message :

"Downloading bug...
Bug title: Printer Oki C5800 is badly supported
Collecting apport information for source package cups...
Uploading additional information to Launchpad bug...
   short text data...
Error connecting to Launchpad: HTTP Error 401: Unauthorized

How to change privileges information in launchpad ?

However, for the driver, I use Oki C5800 driver as suggested in the printer settings. I also tried other solutions found on linuxprinter site, but the result is exactly the same.

Guillaume, looks like you hit bug #410205.
Just run the following commands on a terminal to re-set the privileges and get the question again in the meantime:
rm ~/.cache/apport/launchpad.credentials
apport-collect -p cups 424546

I run

Then
apport-collect -p cups 424546

I set authorization to "Change anything" and then I get this :

You have to allow "Change anything" privileges.

Sorry... It's the first time I post bugs in the launchpad.

The apport-collect part that shows the driver got attached, you could try to delete the whole ~/.cache/apport directory and run the command again.
This is likely an issue in the foo2hiperc driver which is part of foo2zjs, reassigning.

I have reported this problem to the upstream author of foo2zjs. Let us ee whether he can help.

Note also that there are many printers for which the upstream author wrote drivers based on the "Print to File" output of Windows drivers but not having the actual printer. So he was not always able to check the output quality.

The printing speed/delay problem should be solved in Karmic and Lucid. Make sure to install all updates.

This bug was fixed in the package foo2zjs - 20100210-0ubuntu3

---------------
foo2zjs (20100210-0ubuntu3) lucid; urgency=low

  * debian/patches/91-wrapper-scripts-custom-pagesize-via-command-line.dpatch,
debian/rules: Replaced Perl magic to modify the wrapper scripts for
custom page size support via command line by the proper upstream fix
    (LP: #539242).
  * debian/patches/60-getweb.in.dpatch: Redone the patch so that it really
installs everything into the directories of the correct drivers. Before
the files got all installed into subdirectories of /usr/share/foo2zjs
and so firmware and ICM files were only found by the "foo2zjs" driver.
This could solve the color output problem of LP: #424546.
