Bug Description

Release: Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope AMD64
CPU: AMD Athlon X2 7750
VGA: Radeon HD4850

hello,

after installing the ATI's proprietary display driver (i don't know what version, but the one ubuntu suggested me today), if i try to open "display settings" (system -> preferences) it freeze, saturates the CPU (one core alternately, it switches) and make the entire system very slow.

i have to close it and wait some minutes to have back my system, so i can't change important settings like refresh rate.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Judging from your description, I am going to assign this bug to the xserver-xorg-driver-ati package in hopes that it will have a faster response. If you believe that I have chosen the wrong package, please change your bug to the correct one. Good luck on getting it fixed!

affects: ubuntu → xserver-xorg-driver-ati (Ubuntu)

I think I've seen this behavior in the past, but I've tested it with the new fglrx 8.66 and it appears the behavior is changed to make it launch Catalyst Control Center rather than the gnome-display-properties dialog. Not sure if it is fglrx or gnome that solved it, but the usability seems to be working properly with this version of the driver.
