Binary package hint: pidgin-libnotify

Now that this is shipped and enabled by default I get notifications when buddies sign in and out of their IM client. I have 40+ people in my IM list so this adds up to a bunch of spam throughout the day.

I think disabling the "Buddy signs on" by default would be a more sane choice in the libnotify popups dialog, after all I want to get notified when someone wants to talk to me, not when they sign into their computer. For people that need to find people when they login Pidgin already has a "pounce" feature that handles that more elegantly anyway.

This is a hugely annoying default, and even stands out from the field of somewhat annoying and seriously annoying defaults that Ubuntu has lately acquired. The popups are useless (you can't click on them), redundant (pidgin already has audio notification _and_ buddy pounce), and hard to remove (the config UI is not in the preferences pane of pidgin, and there's no system-wide notification preferences UI).

For the love of all that's good and holy in the world, please dump this "feature".

I agree with Jeffrey that these would be more useful if they were actionable. That was designed (last-n users should show up in the messaging indicator, so you can see "joe signed in" and then immediately open up a conversation.

For me, the notifications are nonetheless useful, except when I sign on and see a stream of "sign ons" which are really Pidgin figuring out that *I'm* signed on. We need to fix that.

There is a pidgin-libnotify debdiff on another bug that will send them.
And then there's a indicator-messages debdiff (yet to go up) that'll
receive them.

The attached debdiff changes the sounds in Pidgin to match the the
pidgin-libnotify to extend the timeout for those to be 15 seconds after
the protocol connects. This seems to significantly reduce the number of
false logins for me.

  * Adding debian/patches/13_sounds_and_timers.patch which adjusts
    the time out for sounds to be 15 seconds, which helps get
    fewer spurious login notifications on slow connections. Also,
    switches a few long term timers to _add_seconds to get a little
    bit of power savings. (LP: #345494)
