Bug Description

1. Hardy Beta
2. Cheese 2.21.5
3. Cheese successfully detects webcam Microdia and records a video; I tap "Stop Recording" to end recording
4. When I tap "Stop Recording," the display video (preview) freezes. So, to record another video, I have to restart Cheese. The laptop has Intel 965 graphics with Compiz enabled.

Has anyone else encountered this bug? Basically, video preview only works prior to recording the first video. Then, the image freezes.
On a separate note, I've also noticed that the video box lags behind the window box frame when moving it around the screen. That may be related to my graphics chip.

i have also encountered this bug too. i just upgraded to hardy on my acer 5610z and had this problem with my orbicam. the orbicam works fine, save the mentioned bug.

Confirming the same behavior on my Dell Vostro 1500 and its integrated webcam :
* Before starting the video recording, the preview works and the status LED of the webcam is "on"
* When recording the video, the status LED is still "on"
* After ending the record, the preview stops and the status LED is "off".
--> I have to restart cheese in order to have a preview again.

Confirming as well on a Asus F3S

I have the same problem! with video ad photo. My webcam usa the gspca module.

I also have this exact problem with the builtin camera in my 1420n which uses the uvcvideo driver. Since, the posts above report the bugs with the gspca driver as well, I think it is safe to assume the problem is with cheese and not the webcam drivers.

Sorry to comment twice, but I see that cheese 2.23.2 is now out advertising a lot of crash fixes. Perhaps this will fix the problem...

Bug is present on a Kohjinsha SH6 subnotebook with built-in camera and uvcvideo driver.  Basically, these problems or bugs appear to affect almost all webcams under 8.04.  Cheese was working well in early 8.04 alphas, but more problems occurred closer to final release.

The same bug is present in Hardy Heron (LTS stable release) with my
built-in camera in my acer laptop and uvcvideo driver.

Is the cheese packager out there? I think this (and many other) cheese problems are fixed in the 2.22.2 version. Since this is a bugfix release to gnome 2.22; it seems like it should be updated for Hardy like many other of the gnome 2.22.2 components have.

Hello???! Is anyone paying attention to Cheese bugreports?? There are quite a lot of them now and many would be fixed by packaging version 2.22.2 (which is part of Gnome 2.22.2, which is now supposed to be part of Hardy). Can anyone out there tell me who to contact... or... umm, something. :)

Apparently nobody is paying attention... *Sobs. 2.22.2 is already in Debian (but the .deb has dependency problems) and Fedora 9. Why not here? *Gives up on maintener and builds it from source...

Added corresponding upstream bug in Gnome bugzilla. This one's a blocker there, and is not yet fixed.

Confirming this behaviour on Aspire 6920.

After the preview freezes, you can still choose to take pictures and video, but these don't show up. They still are not present after restarting Cheese.

I just checked, and I seem to have a few updates for Gnome components to 2.22.2. I believe 8.04.1 is due sometime today. Will Cheese be among those updated?

Unfortunately, this bug is not yet fixed in Cheese version 2.22.3, the latest stable update from Gnome that is currently in hardy-proposed.

According to http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=523475 it is fixed in svn, though. And should be in the next released version... I take back my above whining about the maintainer.

Attached is a package with the patch that fixes this bug (sometimes you have to wait a few seconds until you see the video again, I think this is because of gnome-thumb making the thumbnail).

Download and install with "sudo dpkg -i cheese_2.22.1-0ubuntu1_i386.deb".

Bug report: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=523475
SVN Diff: http://svn.gnome.org/viewvc/cheese/trunk/src/cheese-webcam.c?r1=777&r2=795

PS: I'm building the package with dpkg-buidlpackage and, although the package has the same version as the one in the ubuntu repositories, update-manager is offering to update cheese. Both version are exactly the same: 2.22.1-0ubuntu1 :-(

Perhaps this is because cheese 2.22.3 just hit the ubuntu repos

OK, 2.22.3 didn't include the bug fix for this problem, so I made a package with the fix included.

I am still having this problem with Intrepid Alpha 3 with all updates as of 11 Aug. Since my notebook is 64-bit, ajonat, could you possibly build a package for that platform? Thanks for your hard work.

cheese 2.22.3-0ubuntu1 (could not check newer version b/c libraries are unavailable)

sudo lsusb -v | grep webcam
  iProduct 1 Acer CrystalEye webcam

Works on the first video I record, then Iàve to restart Cheese to record a second video.
