Bug Description

I have an HP DeskJet 5150 connected via USB to my desktop. I think I can print normally from my desktop, but I'm not sure, since I mostly use it as a server.

I connect to my printer via IPP on my laptop. When I print, it'll print the first inch or two of the document, then stop. I have to log in to my desktop and re-enable the printer (I do it from the CUPS website, localhost:631). Then, it prints normally.

My printer is configured to automatically turn itself on when it receives a job, and back off after it's been idle for a while. The problem only seems to occur for jobs printed when the printer is off. If I manually turn the printer on before sending the job, if works fine.

This problem only started to occur within the last several weeks. Before that, everything was fine. I can't remember, though, what updates came at that time.

Other notes:
    - Both my desktop and my laptop are running Gutsy.
    - There is a forum thread which recounts other people's similiar experiences. Everyone who's posted so far is using an HP printer. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4262796
    - Bug 139317 might be related to this one, but this isn't a duplicate, since the other one has already been fixed. And my problem didn't begin until long after the other one was fixed.

Same problem here with HP Deskjet 5550.
Description: hp deskjet 5550
 Location:
Printer Driver: HP DeskJet 5550 Foomatic/hpijs (recommended)
Printer State: idle, accepting jobs, published.
Device URI: hp:/usb/deskjet_5550?serial=MY2CH1M15K2L

It starts printing but only after a few lines on the paper cups says "unplugged or turned off" which is not true of course. I have to restart the printer manually, then it works alright afterwards.

hplip 2.7.7.dfsg.1-0ubuntu5
hpijs 2.7.7+2.7.7.dfsg.1-0ubuntu5
udev 113-0ubuntu16
cupsys 1.3.2-1ubuntu7.5

Confirmed over here.

I turn on the computer. The printer shows up as running, but when I print something, the first job (after the reboot) never prints, I have to go to the cups WebUI and "start" the printer. After that, it works great.

Printer: HP LaserJet 1200
Driver: Foomatic/hpijs
Device URI: hp:/usb/HP_LaserJet_1200?serial=00CNCY198362
OS: Gutsy, updated as of this writing.

Hmm, interestingly, this only seems to happen when the first job was a network job- when you print locally, it seems to work fine for me.

Since the duplicate bug 164945 contains a bit of troubleshooting information, it shouldn't be overlooked.

Thanks for foxing this! A question, though: Will this fix be made available to Gutsy users, or do we have to wait for Hardy? (I hope the former is true.)

Scott, for now it is only forseen for Hardy, but volunteers applying this patch to Gutsy are welcome.

Here are packages for testing (and for rebuilding for Gutsy):

---------------
hal-cups-utils (0.6.13+svn86-0ubuntu3) hardy; urgency=low

  * debian/patches/03_disable_on_turn_off_fixes.patch: Improve read-out of
serial number when a printer is disconnected or turned off; use also
the bus type for identifying printers; fixed bug which made serial numbers
getting ignored when identifying a printer.
Do not disable any printer which is driven by the HPLIP CUPS backends when
they are turned off. HPLIP often causes false alarms which make printers
being disabled in the middle of a job (LP: #188752).
