Bug Description

Ubuntu needs a Free, easy-to-use (read: has a GUI) and powerful virtual machine, and VirtualBox is it.

Here's the source tarball for the latest release. It's distributed under GPLv2:

Out of curiosity, given that there's a non-libre DEB available from innotek with package name "virtualbox", will the GPL version ("VirtualBox Open Source Edition") be called "virtualbox-ose" or some such?

InnoTek is in contact with Canonical about packaging it theirself and including it to the repositories.

I note that while Debian is calling the package "virtualbox-ose":
http://packages.debian.org/sid/virtualbox-ose

In Gutsy, its being called "virtualbox":
http://packages.ubuntu.com/gutsy/misc/virtualbox
and its in universe, so I'm guessing it lacks the non-libre components, like the Debian version...

While on the InnoTek site the PUEL-licensed version is also "virtualbox":
http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

This to me is a confusing situation. Shouldn't the universe version have the same name as the Debian version?

You are right. The universe package should be called "virtualbox-ose" just like the Debian package. This helps to avoid confusion.

Should I file a new bug or will the mention in this one be sufficient?

Yes, it's confusing. It is in the process of being sorted out.

I shall close this bug when virtualbox-ose has been accepted into the archive.
