I agree the terminology is confusing. Present terminology:
Mir alpha() == Compiz opacity()
Mir shaped() == Compiz alpha()

Since they're distinctly different things, and both related to alpha blending, I suggest not mentioning "alpha" at all. Hence bug 1236224.
