Description of the change

The intent is to decrease the size of the linaro-alip image, this change also helps other seeds that utilize the linaro-x11-base. asac had suggested the removal of the printing packages.

linaro-alip

remove: vim, chromium-browser, gnome-mohjongg, gnome-sudoku, pidgin

linaro-x11-base:

remove: bluez-cups, cups, cups-bsd, cups-client, foomatic-db-engine, foomatic-db, foomatic-filters, openprinting-ppds, pnm2ppa, ghostscript-x, hplip, ni12xxw, foo2zjs, splix, and pxljr

I think that we should also remove the cups-driver-gutenprint package from linaro-alip. Have you checked if removing all these actually save space? They could be included in the meta packages as dependencies of other packages.

Also, I am not so sure about removing pidgin. I think it is useful to have an instant messenger installed for handheld usage (eg pidgin or empathy).

And also perhaps we could remove simple-scan and any other related packages. If we remove printing, we might as well removing scanning :)

With this proposed change, the linaro-alip tarball drops from 519247536, to 415998121.

I like dropping the support for scanner packages as well... that'll be a different proposal.

That is indeed a significant gain.

What about the cups-driver-gutenprint package from linaro-alip, do we need that?

I do not believe that is needed either. Shall remove that as well.

chromium-browser is redundant because firefox is also seeded; likewise, vim is largely redundant because we have vim-tiny already, which is intended to be a usable default editor without needing to pull in all of vim. This looks like a good start at trimming down the seed.
