About the need for padding (again):
It seems safe if the EFI partition / boot image is smaller than 32 MiB.
Up to that size, the El Torito catalog is able to record the exact size
of the boot image. In this case a firmware or operating system has very few
reason to read over this size.
But beginning with 32 MiB, the catalog's 16-bit block counter field can
only state 0 or 1, which means in UEFI: "Up to the end of the medium".
At this point, a wrong medium size information from the DVD drive could
cause problems.
