looks like there is no icon included with virt-manager. here is the error message from unity;

WARN 2012-02-08 14:57:41 unity.iconloader IconLoader.cpp:509 Unable to load contents of file:///usr/share/virt-manager/pixmaps/virt-manager-icon.svg: Error opening file: No such file or directory
WARN 2012-02-08 15:05:33 unity.launcher LauncherIcon.cpp:436 Unable to load '/usr/share/virt-manager/pixmaps/virt-manager-icon.svg' icon: Failed to open file '/usr/share/virt-manager/pixmaps/virt-manager-icon.svg': No such file or directory

in addition, apt-files shows that no package provides this file;

 $ apt-file search /usr/share/virt-manager/pixmaps/virt-manager-icon.svg

Where are you seeing that error message? Where is the icon missing from?

this icon is missing from the unity launcher. please see attached screenshot.

on my system /usr/share/pixmaps/virt-manager-icon.svg is a broken symlink.

$ ls -ld /usr/share/pixmaps/virt-manager-icon.svg
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 45 2011-08-19 09:07 /usr/share/pixmaps/virt-manager-icon.svg -> ../virt-manager/pixmaps/virt-manager-icon.svg
$ file /usr/share/pixmaps/virt-manager-icon.svg
/usr/share/pixmaps/virt-manager-icon.svg: broken symbolic link to `../virt-manager/pixmaps/virt-manager-icon.svg'
$ file /usr/share/virt-manager/pixmaps/virt-manager-icon.svg
/usr/share/virt-manager/pixmaps/virt-manager-icon.svg: ERROR: cannot open `/usr/share/virt-manager/pixmaps/virt-manager-icon.svg' (No such file or directory)
$ ls -ld /usr/share/virt-manager/pixmaps/virt-manager-icon.svg
ls: cannot access /usr/share/virt-manager/pixmaps/virt-manager-icon.svg: No such file or directory

this error message appears in .xsession-errors in my home directory.

This bug was fixed in the package virt-manager - 0.9.1-1ubuntu2

I am seeing a similar situation still with 0.9.1-1ubuntu5. In addition, starting virt-manager from the launcher fails (admin password is asked for, but nothing further), staring from a terminal succeeds with gksudo or sudo, but not with gksu.

The problem still exists in Ubuntu 14.04 and virt-manager 0.9.5-1ubuntu.
Listing the files installed with virt-manager clearly shows that the file indicated above (/usr/share/virt-manager/pixmaps/virt-manager-icon.svg) doesn't get installed:

There isn't supposed to be an icon called virt-manager-icon, the one listed in the desktop file is virt-manager
