Bug Description

Current xchat is unusable with gnome-shell since it pollutes the notification area with notifications because it falls back to notify-send.

This is fixed upstream with

Tried rebuilding xchat 2.8.8 as distributed in Oneiric with this patch applied. Confirmed that this fixes my issue. Would be great to see this in the next version!

I don't think so, I have xchat 2.8.8-3ubuntu12 and this still happens. A temporary solution is to restart the shell (i.e. run "r" in the command dialog), because that flushes the notification bar

The libnotify patch in xchat is against an old version of libnotify and doesn't work anymore :(
