The Software Center is taking extremely large amounts of time and resources on systems running legacy AGP video cards (ATI) with the new Precise kernel 3.2.x.x and with Oneiric standard kernel in Unity 2D and Cairo doc. However , this is not always the case as with the use of a NVidia card or more recent higher end graphics card.
Even with a high end HDD the software Center will be very sluggish. It appears that it is hooking with and parsing some catalog file that may be a binary. Hence the inbuilt catalog reader may have a *wait* state in that config file??
