I am getting the same problem, I am using Ubuntu 11.10 64bit
I have a microphone connected to the rear input and it is been selected in the sound settings/Input/Connector field.
I can use the microphone in Google chrome voice search feature.
But in the voice recorder, I get a tone recorded instead, It does not record from the microphone!!
So when I tried to selected the "Open Volume control" from the file menu, I got this error:
"gnome-volume-control is not installed in the path."

I also have this problem 64bit. So cannot control the input level for recording in Sound Recorder.
Any chance of a fix or work around?

Update:
I have just tested Sound recorder and found the I CAN record from the rear microphone!! :) It must have been fixed after I re-installed the OS!!
However, when I select the "Open Volume control" from the file menu, I got this error:
"gnome-volume-control is not installed in the path."

This bug was fixed in the package gnome-media - 2.91.2-3ubuntu2

---------------
gnome-media (2.91.2-3ubuntu2) precise; urgency=low

  * debian/control.in:
    - recommends gnome-control-center since grecords calls it
    - updated description, there is no mixer there
    - updated the dpkg build-depends, use "Pre-Depends: ${misc:Pre-Depends}"
  * debian/gnome-media.maintscript:
    - clean the deprecated autostart for the sound control
  * debian/patches/04_grecord_uses_gcc.patch:
    - grecord should call gnome-control-center not the deprecated g-v-c

I have gnome-sound-recorder 2.91.2 installed! (Version obtained from the "About" Dialog Box)
Yet when I select File -> Open Volume Control I get "gnome-volume-control is not installed in the path."

I checked the installed gnome-media and I got:

$ sudo dpkg-query --show gnome-media
gnome-media 2.91.2-2ubuntu2

I guess that is why I am not getting the fix yet!!

Although this is not really a critical issue, but how can I force install the latest gnome-media package in my Oneiric 64?
How long does it usually take from the time a bug is fixed till it becomes available for users?

Thanks
