Firstly, and least importantly, this bug is not set out in the way that we require SRU bugs to be set out (specifically, having an Oneiric task and being fixed in Precise). Please see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates

Secondly, it's probably not appropriate to be enabling new modules for "server team testing" in a stable update.

Thirdly, there are a large set of unrelated changes in the package, including adding the ~3000LOC zcache staging driver and hooking it up to all the filesystems. This is much more dangerous than we would normally consider for a stable update - is there some reason that this is less dangerous than it appears? What is the justification for this change?

Chris, your concerns are all valid.

The only actual change - that affects everyday use - is the speaker fix.
The rest of functionality is modules that are built to be closer to Ubuntu's kernel config. I agree none are critical - DM is only for certain server tests, and zcache can only be enabled via the kernel command line for those will to test memory compression.

The speaker fix only happened upstream during our kernel freeze.
The package was prepared before release but upload held off until enough people confirmed their speakers worked with the debs built for test.

What makes this less dangerous than it appears is that the package built out of this source had been tested by members of the small ac100 community for the past two weeks.

Upstream has apparently just fixed sound after resume, so this should be on hold to add that in the SRU upload - the content of which is still to be decided.

hi chris, while i agree with your statement about zcache, the DM RAID stuff was mistakenly disabled in the last kernel upload before release, it is urgently needed for testing server userspace bits etc during precise development, i dont see why a configuration change should block an SRU (it doesnt in any other of our kernels once it got nodded off by the kernel team).

the sound fix is urgently awaited by the ac100 community that developed this fix for us and just didnt manage to make the release in time, while i understand your concerns, please also take into account that this kernel is maintained by the ac100 community and lives in universe, usually (modulo zcache in this case) the fixes recieve several weeks of testing in the community before we even bother to package them.

Ok. I'm not as familiar with the kernel SRU procedures as other areas, and given the history it sounds like the config change is ok.

Even though it's a universe package the zcache stuff still seems too risky for a stable update. I'll wave this through (without the zcache bits) once the revised upload fixing sound after resume is available. I'll reject the current upload, so you'll be able to use the same version number as the current SRU.

I've reuploaded without zcache and using the same version number.

Hello Jani, or anyone else affected,

Accepted linux-ac100 into oneiric-proposed, the package will build now and be available in a few hours. Please test and give feedback here. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to enable and use -proposed. Thank you in advance!

This upload fixes the speakers sound on the ac100. It is already fixed in Precise as well as part of a larger change - upstream git snapshot.
