Bug Description

I wanted to try to install 7.4 on an extra drive I have. It booted fine into the Live CD environment and I started the installation. I got to the step where I was naming the computer and setting my password. When I hit next, an italic word "The" came up all the way on the right hand side of the form and I was not able to continue installing.

My guess is that there is some error on the form but I can't tell what it is because the message is cut off. I'm sure that the passwords matched, I really don't know what the error might have been.

Sorry I can't be more helpful about what might have happened.

Thanks! You guys do great work.

A screenshot would be great; if you run the installer with 'ubiquity --debug' from a terminal window then /var/log/installer/debug and /var/log/syslog will be helpful too.

I'm afraid that there is nothing I can do about this without the requested screenshot or log files. If you (the original reporter) can reproduce this bug with a current release and can get me the log files, feel free to reopen this bug. (Anyone else reading this who believes they have a similar problem should open a new bug instead.)

I've just reproduced this thanks to another bug report. Reopening.

The error message is one of:

The username you entered is invalid. Note that usernames must start with a lower-case letter, which can be followed by any combination of numbers and more lower-case letters.

or:

The username you entered (${USERNAME}) is reserved for use by the system. Please select a different one.
