I can assure that the patch works but the the checkgmail notifier isn't visible which might be due to unsatisfied dependencies which also include libgtk2.

The following error is obtained:

Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "pixmap", at /usr/lib/perl5/Gtk2.pm line 138.

Though the patch resolves the login issue.

Posted it in a hurry. Clearly it's a warning and not an error. Also please ignore the mention of libgtk2 in previous comment. Sorry about that.

After the restart checkgmail shows up in systray. I also whitelisted all apps before restarting so I am not sure what actually made it work.

Assuming I'm not a C programmer, how does one apply the patch?

Contrary to Mikhail's post, the above posted patch does not work for me.

I am using the latest version as pulled from the sourceforge svn.

This error occurs:
patching file usr/local/bin/checkgmail
Hunk #1 FAILED at 920.
Hunk #2 FAILED at 936.
2 out of 2 hunks FAILED -- saving rejects to file usr/bin/checkgmail.rej

Upon investigation, I found that my install of checkgmail was in /usr/bin/, but changing the patch file by hand to reflect this did not work.

I then manually applied the patch, but this also did not work.
