Bug Description

Binary package hint: amsn

Why is 0.98.3 still packaged with Maverick? It had the same bug with Lucid, which was well known to the developers. They fixed it. I compiled 0.99. It works, without this bug.
The bug is that every time I connect on the MSN network using aMSN, windows to add all of my contact pop up and I have to click on "Cancel" 50 times. The solution was to compile straight from source, early into the Lucid days. Just prepare packages for the newer version and release them.
Compiling this particular package isn't a straight-forward process and it takes a few tweaks to make it work. I don't mind it, but your typical "like Windows, but it works" Ubuntu user typically couldn't.

1) Running Maverick AMD64
2) Package version: 0.98.3-2ubuntu1
3) I expected for a newer version to be bundled with Maverick, a newer version that doesn't give me a popup window to add every contact that I already added (and I have dozens of contacts)
4) What happened was that Maverick still has the buggy old 0.98.3 where popup windows for each contact that I already added opens

This is not a huge issue to me. I can deal with it.. But amsn was one of the main reasons I finally made the switch from Windows and a major draw for my converts. If it's not working right, you have a major usability issue.

according to amsn-project.net the last *stable* release is 0.98.3...

When the 0.99 will be released the new version will be packaged.

When "stable" has major usability issues, then it might be a good idea to at least include the unstable release on the side, include warnings about both ("stable is practically unusable, unstable is great but might have issues that haven't been found") and give the users a choice.

I agree with you but unfortunately this is not the ubuntu way... the best idea is to ask the developers to release a public stable release soon!

In some cases the Ubuntu way could use a change.. I already asked the devs to come out with a new stable release, for the benefit of other users. Whether they'll do something is a different story.

Great news. It's a great package and it was critical in convincing me to finally make the switch a couple of years ago (as my wife's still big on MSN).

This bug was fixed in the package amsn - 0.98.4-0ubuntu1

---------------
amsn (0.98.4-0ubuntu1) natty; urgency=low

  * New upstream release
  * Tarball repacked according to debian/README.source
  * debian/patches/07_infoaudacious.dpatch: dropped, applied upstream
  * debian/patches/08_offline_message_issue.dpatch: dropped, applied upstream
  * This upload also closes the following bugs:
    - LP: #667570
    - LP: #689767

amsn (0.98.3-5ubuntu1) natty; urgency=low

  * Merge from debian unstable, remaining changes:
    - add 08_use_aplay_for_sound.dpatch patch by Festor Wailon Dacoba to use
      aplay to play sounds
    - debian/control:
      + modify iceweasel to firefox | abrowser in amsn Suggests field
      + add xdg-utils and gstreamer0.10-nice to amsn Depends field
      + modify sox to alsa-utils in amsn Suggests field as we are now using
        aplay

amsn (0.98.3-5) unstable; urgency=medium

  * Uploading to unstable because of the fact the test previously made in the
    upload to experimental (revision 0.98.3-4) was successful.

amsn (0.98.3-4) experimental; urgency=low

  * debian/rules: utils/webcamsn is not created for hurd-i386 so it has been put
    into the conditional ifneq ($(DEB_HOST_ARCH_OS),hurd) for avoiding copying
    it in the install target.
