Bug Description

Binary package hint: chromium-browser

chromium-browser with gecko-mediaplayer hangs randomly on KDE unless gecko-mediaplayer is rebuilt with --without-gconf

See http://code.google.com/p/gecko-mediaplayer/issues/detail?id=64 and http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=24507

Having installed http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/daily-live/20100323/lucid-desktop-i386.iso in Sun VirtualBox 3.1.4 I installed chromium-browser 5.0.307.11~r39572-0ubuntu1 and gecko-mediaplayer 0.9.9.2-1 using KPackageKit.

On the first start of chromium I've got a message saying that the page "Getting started with Google Chrome" became unresponsive. I was not able to reproduce that, but in a while I got the same message for "http://code.google.com/chromium/", this time I didn't press any button and the page loaded in a minute. I'm unable to reproduce it again.

Rebuilding manually gecko-mediaplayer with --without-gconf had fixed the same issue for me in Karmic.

May be it's possible to have gecko-mediaplayer built with --without-gconf in multiverse for Lucid?

I can confirm this, in fact every single page hangs up if gecko-mediaplayer is installed. If I remove it Chromium works great.

Issue confirmed in Kubuntu Lucid with latest stable Chrome (5.0.375.29). Removing the package: gecko-mediaplayer allows Chrome to work properly.

Please rebuild gecko-mediaplayer with --without-gconf in order to make it work properly under KDE.

This bug was fixed in the package gecko-mediaplayer - 1.0.0-0ubuntu1

---------------
gecko-mediaplayer (1.0.0-0ubuntu1) natty; urgency=low

  [ Cesare Tirabassi ]
  * Update dependencies list (xulrunner, midbrowser and firefox-3.5)
  * Add konqueror, opera and chromium in long description
  * Removed all symlinks, lookup is now implemented upstream by all
    compatible packages (Closes: #581807).
    This may (and likely will) break backports.
  * Updated watch file in line with new google code standard
    (thanks D. Leidert)

  [ Julien Lavergne ]
  * New upstream release (LP: #693867)
   - Fix crash when loading iTunes store (LP: #569682)
  * debian/rules:
   - Build without gconf support, which should fix the hang with chromium
    (LP: #545209).
  * debian/patches/90_svn420_fix_null.patch:
   - From upstream, fix NULL pointer errors (LP: #709277)
  * debian/patches/91_svn421_disable_npp_initialize.patch:
   - From upstream, fix FTBFS with new xulrunner.
  * debian/control:
   - Drop build-depends on quilt, handle by format 3.0.
  * debian/patches/01_xulrunner-20.patch:
   - Drop, replace by upstream patch 91_svn421_disable_npp_initialize.patch.

Since now gecko-mediaplayer is build without gconf, could the plugin be un-blacklisted ? The bug report mention it will be available only on Chrome 11, so is it possible to backport the fix ? The patch is available here : http://src.chromium.org/viewvc/chrome/trunk/src/webkit/plugins/npapi/plugin_list_posix.cc?view=patch&r1=74999&r2=74998&pathrev=74999

I unblacklisted gecko-mediaplayer, but users still complain. @_@
Can we update Lucid/Maverick from 0.9.9.2 to 1.0.0 so users there get the fix as well?

This bug is obsolete. Chromium no longer supports NPAPI plugins.
