Bug Description

Byobu now installs a desktop file and icon (Bug #449200) in order to show up in the menu. While I personally find this useful (and find the icon very nice BTW), I have to wonder if this is really something that we want to expose to users on the default desktop install. It seems like an advanced program that will probably confuse many desktop users.

Running a current lucid daily image, Byobu Window Manager is the only item that shows up under Applications > System Tools. This is because ubuntu-desktop depends on screen which in turn depends on byobu.

I'm not sure how to best address this issue. We could remove screen from the desktop seed, but that doesn't feel like the best idea.

Sorry. I meant to file this against the Ubuntu package, not upstream.

I can remove the icon, or the menu item. Or install them in a second package or something.

I'm biased, of course, but I really like the icon, and the menu item, so I'm not the most objective judge. I find it really useful to be able to launch byobu from the Applications menu. And it's intended to be a "friendlier" version of the console. Note that we do have the Terminal in the Accessories menu. I have separately proposed that we expose a checkbox in the preferences menu in gnome-terminal that would launch Byobu by default, when you open a terminal. This is nice because your shell sessions will persist after logouts, or through X crashes and such.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll take this up with the desktop team.

The icon should certainly be at least moved, as the System Tools menu is not used by any other applications in the default install, so only appears because of byobu being there. I would suggest that if the application is to remain exposed, I would move it to the Accessories menu, and/or replace gnome-terminal with it. If it replaces gnome-terminal, the menu item's name should probably better describe what it is, so it should probably at least have the word "terminal" in it.

Indeed it should not be in Apps->System Tools, we do not use this category.

IMHO a default desktop application should not have the menu item in the first place, though. We don't even expect users to use the Terminal, much less explain them what "screen" is.

I think the "recommends: byobu" for screen is too much. Recommends means "you really need that unless you know what you are doing" (http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-relationships.html#s-binarydeps), which is clearly not the case here: screen works just fine without byobu. So I propose that this gets dropped, and instead added to the server seeds?

As a fallback alternative, the menu entry (i. e. desktop file) could be NoDisplay=True, and then interested folks could enable the menu entry in the menu editor. That's a bit hard to discover, though, so it might be easier to install the package if you want to use byobu on a desktop?
