Bug Description

Even if someone has autologin enabled there are cases where they would want to lock the screen. We shouldn't use this solely to determine whether the screen should be locked via the session menu.

Some usecases:

 * I have autologin enabled, but I'm at a coffee shop and need to go to the bathroom.
 * Cat on the desk and I need more coffee.
 * Annoying roommate that isn't destructive but will post lude facebook posts for me.

Many people have a system-wide encrypted single-user-system (especially on laptops) and therefor enable auto-login to only get once prompted for a password. For such people having no possibility to lock the screen is a serious security problem and a real fix should not be delayed for 10.04!

Just for completeness: gdm auto-login setting in this state also affects if the screen is locked after hibernating or not.

why do you need to stop people from locking screen if they want to in autologin cases there?

If there is not enough time to properly fix the session , why fix it? why is this bug being pushed for 10.04? :/

Why not provide a gconf setting? atleast those who want it back will have a way to enable it.. Why does this have to be hardcoded for the next 6 moths? Pls provide a gconf setting :)

Sebastien Bacher, Bug #436724 also has suggestions from Mpt , is this not possible to get this done by Karmic?

The behaviour confuse users what is the rational to block that action anyway, you still get locking using ctrl-l or on suspend, etc

+1. It should be disabled when the password is locked, not when autologin is enabled. Autologin and password locking are different concepts, and I don't see a reason to disable screen locking when having autologin. After autologin you are in a fresh session, but with a locked session you might currently work on sensitive documents, or typing a private mail, or what not.

The indicator doesn' t have a configuration panel, and even if it has, it would just be an "unbreak my computer" setting IMHO.

Here is a patch to re-enable the lock option even when autologin is in place. I've tested that on my system, where I use autologin by default.
