Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-notifier

I suggest renaming the update-notifier > update-manager daemon .
Since its now working just as an update manger daemon, and there is *no other specific notification*, which existed earlier.

This would ease the discomfort that several users have complained in Bug #332945 , saying the new pop-under is a security threat.

The main source of the discomfort is because the daemon is labeled different from the app it opens.
Renaming it would make it more up-to date with the present designed behavior for updates.

In <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareUpdateHandling> I propose renaming "Update Manager" to "Software Updater" (on the grounds that it's more informative). If that happens, it might make more sense to have software-updater-daemon.

Does the phrase "update-notifier" actually appear to the user? If not, I don't see a need to rename the package.

This won't require any source or binary renaming. It just needs a .desktop file with a nice user string in it that matches the binary, as far as I can tell.

update-notifier does more than just notify you of updates. It also watches for .crash files in /var/crash, cups printer drivers, disks with debian packages, and local avahi connections among other things. I don't think it makes sense to rename update-notifier to update-manager-daemon.

As I understand it, most of those tasks are to be converted to Upstart jobs.

Yes, that's true and most of them have been, however they are still part of this package.
