I confirmed this when my own system running Karmic Koala crashed after restarting. I had just updated using Synaptic Package Manager to apply the updates.

I really enjoyed this one because it implies that the program was packaged and uploaded without the maintainer ever even having run it.

This bug was fixed in the package unattended-upgrades - 0.50ubuntu2

  * Add sanity-check on clean to prevent uploads with Python syntax errors.
  * Fix syntax error in unattended-upgrades-shutdown (LP: #396134).
