Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please try to obtain a valgrind log following the instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Valgrind and attach the file to the bug report. This will greatly help us in tracking down your problem.

Amusingly, I cannot reproduce the crash under Valgrind. It runs like a champ. I have attached the log, maybe if is of help. Without valgrind I can crash gvfsd-gphoto2 easily.

the log has lot of errors, the renamed binary has no debug variant though, could you either rebuild a debug variant or try to run gvfs-gphoto under valgrind directly without renaming the binary?

Here is an updated valgrind run with gvfs, gphoto, etc rebuilt with debugging symbols.

Once again I did the same things that crash it pretty quickly when not running under valgrind.

Hope it helps.

upstream has fixed a gvfs issue which could lead to the crash: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=127452&action=view

could you try to build a gvfs using this change anf try if that fixes the issue?
