Bug Description

Binary package hint: gparted

When running gparted on the dell mini version of ubuntu 8.04 lts, the program stalls on "Scanning Devices" and will not proceed further. I am not aware of any workaround.

Thanks for filing the bug report, but there isn't enough info to diagnose/fix your problem. A workaround (From a few minutes of googling) shows that you can skip the "Scanning devices" section by running gparted from the terminal with your desired device as the first argument, so something like:
gparted /dev/sda
May help you.

Thank you so much for responding so quickly. I tried what you suggested
on both the hard drive and an sd card and gparted is able to load. When
it reads the device it is unable to determine what the device is or even
if it is partitioned (it reads unknown device and shows it as being all
unallocated space). I have never filed a bug report before so I am sorry
about it being a bit vague. If there is any more specific information I
can include please let me know. What I really want to do is add swap
space because dell did not configure any.

I would really like to help fill the blank spots in my initial bug report but I need to know what information is required to make this a complete report. Is there anyone else who has this problem?

I have an update on this. After pursuing the problem on the ubuntu forums, I found out that it will work after waiting for several minutes. For me it took just under 10 but then it loaded properly. I would still consider this a problem however because my ubuntu desktop only takes a few seconds to scan the partitions.
