Bug Description

Binary package hint: smartmontools

smartmontools init script lacks the 'status' action. It would be useful to be able to determine if the daemon is running or not by querying:
 * /etc/init.d/smartmontools status

A concerted effort is being made to add status actions to many Ubuntu services' init scripts:
 * https://wiki.ubuntu.com/InitScriptStatusActions

Thanks for the bug report!

Any chance you have a patch that adds the status action?

I believe that the patch I attached last night should add the status function. This was my first attempt to create a patch/use launchpad so please let me know if there are any problems with it.

Thanks for your patch. Could you please re-create your patch against the latest version of smartmontools in jaunty? I'm going to unsubscribe ubuntu-main-sponsors, so once you are done and have uploaded the new patch, please re-subscribe ubuntu-main-sponsors for it to be attended to.

Also, the syntax for the bug closure in the changelog is not quite correct. You are missing a # before the bug number, so it should be (LP: #nnnnnn).

Thanks for your work.

Thanks for the feedback! I plan to re-submit this patch for jaunty in a
few weeks once I have some free time again.

Cheers,

Steve

I think this patch should work. It is targeted at jaunty and the LP reference is fixed.

smartmontools (5.38-2ubuntu2) jaunty; urgency=low

  * debian/control: Depend on lsb >= 3.2-14, which has the status_of_proc() function.
  * debian/smartmontools.init: Add the 'status' action (LP: #300535).

For your information: 'status' action now exists (in Karmic), however it fails. I have created bug 491324 regarding that.
