Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and help make Ubuntu better. It seems that the hotkey-setup init script fails when modprobe'ing the thinkpad_acpi module. Please provide the following additional information:

1. Please include the output of the command "uname -a" in your next response. It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command "dmesg > dmesg.log" after a fresh boot and attach the resulting file "dmesg.log" to this bug report.
3. Please run the command "sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log" and attach the resulting file "lspci-vvnn.log" to this bug report.
4. Please run "sudo dmidecode > dmidecode.log" and attach the resulting file "dmidecode.log" to this bug report.

Thanks in advance

I would like to confirm that this happens on my laptop as well, so it's not just a bug in Dutch :) Now, my laptop's old enough that it could be a completely different cause here, but it's a ThinkPad as well so it's got to be something with it trying to load that module. My laptop doesn't even support acpi, it's apm only, so I think it's possible that this package is trying to load the wrong module at times, or it doesn't fail nicely. At any rate, I don't have any hotkeys on this laptop, so I'm not overly concerned. I would just like apt to quit throwing errors at me every time I update.

tocotac - I think you've got a different problem. The original issue was that the script would error if the thinkpad-acpi module failed to load. That is fixed now, and the script will finish gracefully if the module doesnt load. However your problem seems to be that the thinkpad-acpi module loads successfully, but the stuff that should be in /sys is not there.

Matt, what do you think?

I have the same problem as tocotac.

I was upgrading from 8.04 to 8.10. It is an IBM T22 laptop. I'm not sure how to copy the files you requested as I'm a bit of a Noobie but the error message is the same except the mine is in English.

Any suggestions would be appreciated as I can't use my laptop at the moment.

Thks,

jj

tocotac, I'm a bit of a noobie. I did an apt-get install linux-image-2.6.27-7-generic but that did not install properly - something about no postfix - could not add to grub. Am I missing something?

I new to ubuntu and linux in general and ran into the hotkey-setup problem while upgrading my IBM T22 laptop from 8.04 to 810.

Thanks, jj

Ok, I solved part of my problem.
When I ran the upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10, I selected remove "obselete packages and it removed grub. So I ran:
 apt-get install grub
and now inux-image-2.6.27-7-generic has been installed

But now Gnome does not run - I just get a blank screen.

When I look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log it seems that everything is working properly

Any ideas?

I think this can happen when the package is updated under an older kernel.
It should be fixed to gracefully continue if the required sysfs files are
missing for any reason.
