Bug Description

https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/internet/C/troubleshooting.html

First step: "Open Device Manager (System → Preferences → Hardware Information)."

This menu entry isn't present in a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.04. I don't think I can overstate how breathtakingly bad it is to require users to open non-existent tools as a troubleshooting step.

Thank you for reporting this.
Should be "Open Hardware Drivers (System->Administration->Hardware Drivers)"

I checked main branch and document doesn't exist in this form. Will check the hardy branch and submit a patch if required.

this patch applies to branch lp:ubuntu-doc/hardy the intrepid branch documentation has been revised and does not include this section.

the patch corrects "Open Device Manager (System → Preferences → Hardware Information)." to "Open Hardware Drivers (System->Administration->Hardware Drivers)." in source file ubuntu/internet/C/wireless.xml

Thank you Oliver for finding the bug.

This was amended some time ago in the system documentation for Intrepid, Matthew - could we patch this to be pushed onto the HUC page?

Although I'm greatful that you took the time to report this bug, I must point out that the Documentation Team is staffed entirely by volunteers and that while happy to correct any errors each member of this team is working to the best of their ability and in their own, unpaid time.

Thanks for the patch. However, I'm not quite sure this is the right fix. The "Hardware Drivers" program doesn't actually display all recognised hardware, only hardware which requires proprietary drivers. So the program doesn't display all hardware which is recognised by the system, and we would be misleading users to imply that if a particular device isn't listed there, then that means that it isn't recognised by the system.

Probably we should suggest that the user opens "System -> Administration -> Network" to determine whether the device has been properly recognised by the system.

What do you think?

In my personal original scenario, System -> Administration -> Network didn't list my wireless adapter, and the correct next step was to set up NDISWrapper. However, simply pointing the user at System -> Administration -> Network and leaving the other steps intact could lead them to believe there is a hardware problem per step 3.

The current version for Intrepid uses lshw. The only reason we had Hardware Information was to keep away from the terminal. That said its removal prompted that we now use lshw. Of course there were substantial changes in that since the 7.10. The documentation in the current Intrepid branch is accurate for Hardy, so instead of patching how about using that?

Hardware Drivers is a different program all together, lets stick with lshw. The fact is that in its current state Wireless support is poor in general - the aim of the troubleshooting guide is to take out the majority of steps that people will ask in the forums when users ultimately request help there or through Launchpad's answers system.

This should be marked as "Fix Commited" because it has been for some time in the Intrepid trunk. There is little more we can do either until the late alpha stages because as has been confirmed in the previous release cycle, things are removed at the eleventh hour!

@Oliver, it also needs to be noted that if Network doesn't list your adapter that doesn't impy that NDIS is the next step, if the device is off, as is the case with many integrated Broadcom cards that remain switched off if disabled in Windows, enabling NDIS would not rectify the issue.

How big a change is involved? This is the sort of fix that we need to
give an opportunity to translators to amend as well.

Its not a lot really, a couple of paragraphs rewritten, an explanation of lshw's new output (about a paragraph) and some restructuring. Essentially, reference to Hardware Information was removed and lshw was used for the first stage of troubleshooting.

Matthew, you noted that this was fixed in ubuntu-docs 8.10.2 and I can confirm that we are now using lshw in section 3.3.2 of that page. Marking as Fix Released.
Are there any plans to release this in Hardy? 8.04.2 is due out soon.

Connor,

Let's definitely think about fixing this bug in hardy too. I'm slightly concerned about the amount of changes that are required based on Dougie's comment here - https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-docs/+bug/243797/comments/11 - but I think the best option is for someone to prepare a patch with as limited changes as possible that we can look at to assess the scope of the changes and decide whether it's worth getting them translated and pushed to Ubuntu 8.04.

This has now been completed, as far as bugs go. It would have been nice to have incorporated more information on DSL, Modems and Broadband Wifi but I haven't any of these to test with.

Matthew, I'd say I was happy for this to be changed in Hardy to the current version in Jaunty - do you want me to patch it in the Hardy trunk and push again?
