For me, that transparent business has been around since I've been using Wine with Steam (0.9.39 ish)

But it's interesting this bug comes up. Since 0.9.58 , there hasn't been an icon space at all in the tasktray

I can confirm this bug running Steam on Ubuntu 7.10 AMD64 compiled according to the WineOn64 Bit Wiki at http://wiki.winehq.org/WineOn64bit. My hardware specs are at the end of this description.

The symptom is that Steam duplicates the rightmost icon in my tray instead of placing the Steam icon there, and the duplicated icon doesn't do anything.

I confirmed it by observing that when I had both my Basket and Network Manager icon in the tray as usual and ran Steam it duplicated the Basket icon. But when I exited Steam, and Basket to remove its tray icon, and restarted Steam it duplicated the Network Manager icon.

I tried wine 0.9.59 compiled clean without any patches, and with a ported 3DMark05 patch. I also tried it with a clean wineprefixcreate installation, and then using some native DLLs that have helped with some problems in the past, including native DX installation. Since I noticed in the announcement that you have new support for dual head systems I also tried running it after disconnecting my second monitor (HDTV) and creating a single monitor xorg.conf file (and doing a clean reboot of course).

None of this changed anything, and I didn't see anything unusual when running it with my HDTV plugged in and enabled.

My relevant hardware is:

Gigabyte GA-K8N Pro-SLI Motherboard (Nvidia Nforce 4 based)
Athlon64 X2 4200+ CPU
Nvidia 7800GT 256MB PCI-Express Video Card
3GB Dram
Hauppauge Win TV-Go PCI TV Tuner Card

I tested between 0.9.57 and 58, for the icon space disappearing from the task tray and placing itself on the virtual desktop. But this was in error, since I said the new problem comes up SINCE 58. I was testing post-58 GIT. Ugh.
Time to do it all over. Oh well.

The icon appears there, then disappears. Then, it disappears altogether.
Not even the transparent icon space appears in the KDE task tray.

I checked out the git version on Tuesday night, and can confirm the bug no longer exists for me when using Steam. Comment #5 gives my hardware/OS specs but I forgot to mention that I was running under gnome.

I tried Steam running in the full desktop, and in a virtual 1024x768 desktop, and the system tray icon appears and works correctly in both (in a virtual desktop it appears in the upper left corner of the window).

Thanks to all the wine developers for addressing this bug so quickly. Now I'm going to have to send you another donation for being so darn good! Grrr... :)

For newbies using Ubuntu Gutsy AMD64 who can't wait for the next release just do this to get the latest git version:

cd
sudo aptitude -y install git-core
git clone git://source.winehq.org/git/wine.git wine

This will put the source in ~/wine. You can then follow the instructions at http://wiki.winehq.org/WineOn64bit to compile and install wine.

Note that you won't get the nice integrated menu that the Ubuntu packager provides, but with a little work you can figure out how to build it yourselves (Hint: install the packaged version and copy all the menu entries to a save location, then uninstall the packaged version, install the git version, and copy the menu entries back). Sorry but I've taken up too much space with installation instructions on a bug thread already, so I can't go into more detail.

Ooops, I thought this one was fixed but the Steam system tray icon still doesn't appear correctly if the bottom panel is in autohide mode and hidden. A space is created for it in the system tray, but right or left clicking over it does nothing.

However, if you hold your cursor over the panel so it's visible when Steam starts then the tray icon appears and functions correctly. And of course if the panel isn't in autohide mode the tray icon also appears correctly. So it's definitely not being loaded correctly if the panel isn't visible when Steam starts.

And by the way, I only have one panel, it's at the bottom of the screen, and it's in full auto hide mode (set by using gconf-editor and setting /apps/panel/default_setup/toplevels/bottom_panel/auto_hide_size to 0). Also, I'm using wine 0.9.60.

I noticed that the status of this bug hasn't been changed since I reported it has reoccurred. Has the "invisible panel tray icon" bug been fixed, or do I have to do something to change it status?

You should file a new bug, this one is about "systray broken for all applications", which is fixed now.
