Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

Source: Trash Applet 2.22.0 from gnome-applets 2.22.0-0ubuntu1

Ubuntu: 8.04 Beta

If I log out and log back in, the trash icon will be missing. The applet is apparently there, because I tried adding the trash applet about eight times in a row to no avail, but when I rebooted there were eight trash icons in the panel.

So the applet is there, and you can add multiple instances of it, but the icon disappears and the only way to fix it is to reboot.

Not a dupe, as far as I can tell. I am seeing the specific behavior described here re. the garbage bin applet in a fresh install of Hardy (not a beta, the release). Unlike the bug described in #195915, this one can't be worked around with killall gnome-panel; the garbage bin icons do not reappear.

Killing the /usr/lib/gnome-applets/trashapplet process is also not enough to make the garbage bin reappear. Nor is killing /usr/lib/gnome-applets/trashapplet, telling it not to reload, and then restarting gnome-panel.

If I find something less drastic than a reboot that *does* make the bin icon reappear on the panel, I will post it here - but I really don't think this is a dupe, especially since #195915 is marked Fixed and this one is still happening.

I can confirm that this bug, which was reported as a duplicate of bug #195915, is now fixed.

BTW, I want to thank everyone for their patience in putting up with these things. I tried my best to find an existing version of the bug in question, but didn't see anything that matched the problems that I was having. Almost immediatley it was suggested that this was in fact a duplicate. Well, all I can do is try, and maybe contribute what little I can to community. I'm sure you all see way more duplicates than you need to. Bug #195915 got fixed. This one got fixed. Probably the same bug. Thanks to everyone who got it fixed.

Hmm...

I'm still having a problem with this. Ubuntu 8.04, on two different computers, one is PPC & the other is i386. I have the gnome-panel (1:2.22.1-0ubuntu1) installed that supposedly fixed the issue in Bug #195915.

My trash icon has disappeared on both machines. It disappeared first on the PPC machine, and then a few days later on the i386 machine.

All the other applets appear and work fine on both computers. I can even add other applets, just not the trash. Perhaps there is a specific situation that still triggers this behavior, but I haven't been able to track it down if so...

Restarting does not make the trash icon reappear!

Still have an invisible trash icon here, on both computers. Changing themes/icons doesn't bring it back. If I can click exactly on the one-pixel-wide invisible strip, I can get the trash menu, but the icon is not present...

I'm having the exact same problem! Not that I'm so desperate and can't get on with my life, but it shouldn't be, right? I installed Ubuntu so I wouldn't have to deal with too much of these kind of "imperfections" and to be able to deal with them when they occur. I really hope someone can find a solution for this. That would be great!

I can confirm the bug, also, today the sun/moon Clock applet icon went missing.
I've tried runnning "sudo /usr/bin/gtk-update-icon-cache -f -t ..." on several folders inside /usr/share/icons/ but it didn't help.

killall gnome-panel does not help.

If run killall trashapplet && /usr/lib/gnome-applets/trashapplet in console and add Trash applet to panel - all ok, icon appears and is visible. But if trashapplet started by bonobo, icon is invisible.

Ah, that's useful. I think I know what it may be.

Can you try this, please?

Edit: /usr/lib/bonobo/servers/GNOME_Panel_TrashApplet.server

Add this inside the <oaf_server location="/usr/lib/bla/trashapplet"> element
(NOT the one with the location="OAFIID:bla")

    <oaf_attribute name="bonobo:environment" type="stringv">
        <item value="DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS"/>
    </oaf_attribute>

Alexander, it helps!
Now, trash applet started by bonobo and its icon appears properly.

Thank you.

OK, that's great news. I've a feeling the move to GIO probably had something
to do with it. Can someone please push this fix to upstream GNOME? I'm very
busy with exams...

Sent this upstream myself. Patch cleanly applies to our debian package if a core dev wants to add it. http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=537011

I've experienced the same issue and also Alexander Jones' fix works for me too.

A workaround based on savagex post wrote on 2008-06-05 consisits on openning "System>Preferences>Sessions" and on "Startup Programs" tab add an entry like "Name: Trash applet starter; Command: /usr/lib/gnome-applets/trashapplet". Now without Alex's fix also the trash bin applet becomes visible after next session login.
