Bug Description

pysdl2 dep8 is currently failing against libsdl2 in mantic-proposed on all architectures: https://autopkgtest.ubuntu.com/results/autopkgtest-mantic/mantic/amd64/p/pysdl2/20230808_001651_edcc4@/log.gz

I have filed a PR upstream, but am not sure it's entirely correct so am awaiting feedback.

    error indicator correctly in more cases, fixing further test failures
