Installing plymouth-theme-spinner results in unwanted purple screen

Bug Description

Installing plymouth-theme-spinner results in an unwanted purple screen during start-up:

1. Black screen with BIOS logo, no spinner.
2. Purple screen with no logos or spinners. <========
3. Black screen with BIOS logo and spinner.
4. Login screen.

WORKAROUND:

sudo update-grub

and the problem goes away.

    - call update-grub when installing/removing the theme so grub isn't
