Bug Description

Please include the fonts-android package in Ubuntu's component main.

fonts-android includes the fonts-droid-fallback binary, and as a result of the discussion at bug 1625734, the server team wants that libgs9-common, which currently recommends fonts-noto-cjk, is changed to instead recommend fonts-droid-fallback.

fonts-android is a Debian package and included in Debian's component main. It was included in Ubuntu's component main between trusty and wily.

Bugs:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?src=fonts-android

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fonts-android

I have read https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuMainInclusionRequirements, and haven't found any issues that would prevent the proposed main inclusion.

I mean, it's fine to put this back if we need it. It used to be in main, it's just fonts, etc.

But for the same reasons that we downgraded it (has a replacement), it would still be nice to drop it again in the future. Is there another way to solve bug 1625734 than going back to fonts-android?

Is it possible to split fonts-noto-cjk into smaller chunks for example?

But for yakkety sure, let's promote this again.

Yes it is. We did consider doing so last spring, but decided not to; please see <https://bugs.debian.org/823374>.

For the Z series it would be possible to pick up that idea again. In that case we would get:

* fonts-noto-cjk
  Providing the weights regular and bold; approx. 22 MiB archive space

* fonts-noto-cjk-extras
  Providing the other font weights; approx. 50 MiB archive space

fonts-noto-cjk would then require approx. 22 - 2 = 20 MiB more archive space comapred to fonts-droid-fallback. If that's something which the server team can 'live with', it's one way to handle this.

Here is my back-of-the-envelope calculation:

If the target size is 703MiB, today we are 812MiB, over by 109MiB.

If the GCC6 packages do indeed shrink down to GCC5 sizes (~90 -> ~30) that will save 60MiB and removing fonts-noto-cjk and adding fonts-android removes another (76 - 2) 74MiB. The new total would be 678MiB.

Adding another 20MiB, would take us right up to 698MiB with 5MiB to spare.

@Joshua: Assuming that the server team wants to keep the ISO size CD compatible also in 17.04, your calculation indicates that you would need to use an alternative package for Chinese fonts even if we would do the split I mentioned in comment #4.

So I would say that the ball is in your court now. I see no other reason to spend time on a split of fonts-noto-cjk, and won't take any initiative doing so unless it actually makes things better.

Please let me know.
