Bug Description

I've encoded a video into a file called "movie.mp4" with video codec MPEG4, and audio codec MP3. Then there's the subtitles file, move.srt in a UTF-8 encoded file. Using totem-gstreamer, when I open that video, it doesn't detect the presence of ANY subtitles. View->Subtitles->Empty. However, when I installed totem-xine instead, it detects and plays the subtitles, but I cannot change the font of the subtitles. Playing embedded subtitles in mkv files works fine though.

Ah sorry it seems the I encoded it into AVI format with the extension MP4 by mistake. But even so, when renamed to movie.avi I still have the same problem.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a bug in gstreamer.

I encounter this problem too. It doesn't detect the srt file automatically, and manually specifying by right clicking on the playlist item then manually selecting the subtitle does not work either.

i was about to fill a report concerning the fact that Totem preferences in Ubuntu 8.10 should have "automatically load subtitles" activated by default
i had to manually activate it
i don't understand that choice
Maybe this is related to this report ?

You're right, enabling that option correctly displays the subtitles. This should definitely be enabled by default.

this is already fixed upstream with 2.25.X , text subtitles are already detected by default and are available trough the View->Subtitles menu. you can read more about it here: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=499463; thanks for reporting.
