Bug Description

Both Intel 8260 Wifi and Bluetooth firmwares are now available in mainline linux-firmware and has been tested. Vivid currently doesn't support Intel 8260 Wifi and BT, and need to backport the firmwares.

While the vivid kernel has some code to support Intel 8260, the highest firmware API it supports is -12 whereas the first firmware Intel released for this hardware is -13. Including the firmware in vivid isn't going to help because the vivid kernel isn't going to use it.

We're also planning to backport 8260 Wifi/BT drivers for better support, which use the new firmware. In our test the old driver is not work well.

@Seth,
the use case we have here is backports-4.2-rc1-1 (old name compat-wireless) as a dkms plus the vivid kernel. That's why HWE want to add the firmwares to linux-image in vivid-updates.

Hello Phidias, or anyone else affected,

Accepted linux-firmware into trusty-proposed. The package will build now and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-firmware/1.127.15 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug, mentioning the version of the package you tested, and change the tag from verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing will help us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in advance!

Verify step:

1. Remove Intel 8260 module
2. Clean install Vivid/Trusty, and install Intel 8260 module back
3. Install 4.1 kernel which contains 8260 Wifi/BT driver
4. Check if the device works -> no, can't find firmware as expected
5. Add -proposed repo and update, then install new linux-firmware
6. Reboot and verify if the device works -> yes, both wifi and BT can find the firmware and work

For Trusty:
Install linux-firmware-1.127.15

For Vivid:
Install linux-firmware-1.143.3

Both work.

Rahul: In order for your wifi to work you either need to be running running kernel version 4.1 or later or else be using a iwlwifi backport driver from that kernel version or later. The standard kernels for 14.04 and 15.04 do not support this hardware (at least not with any publicly released version of the firmware), but the kernel in wily does.
