Bug Description

When booting into kernel 3.11.0-3 I keep getting a message that my network cable is disconnected. Checking dmesg and lshw -C networking, it looks like the network driver is installed, but checking lsmod, I don't see the driver in the list.

Did this issue occur in a previous version of Ubuntu, or is this a new issue?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.11 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

The problem only showed up with the 3.11-0.3 kernel. I'm currently using 3.11.0-2-generic #5 with zero problems. I'll give the upstream kernel a try tomorrow, and report back the results.

Thanks for testing. It sounds like this might have been introduced in v3.11-rc6. Can you test the following two upstream kernels:

v3.11-rc5: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.11-rc5-saucy/
v3.11-rc6 http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.11-rc6-saucy/

I suspect rc5 will have the bug and rc6 will not. I can perform a kernel bisect if that is the case.

I see the following three changes for the skge network driver between rc5 and rc6:

f7b7a365331deb4553944a0b695dd6371614053a skge: fix build on 32 bit

I can confirm that networking does work with kernel 3.11.0-031100rc5-generic #201308112135, and does not work with kernel 3.11.0-031100rc6-generic #201308181835

Thanks for testing. I built three test kernels, each with a commit from comment #7 reverted. Can you test each of these kernels and post back if one of these kernels fixes this bug? The kernels can be downloaded from:

Commit e47851f reverted: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1216745/reverts/e47851f/
Commit f7b7a36 reverted: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1216745/reverts/f7b7a36/
Commit 136d8f3 reverted: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1216745/reverts/136d8f3/

If none of these test kernels resolves this bug, we can perform a bisect to find the commit that introduced this.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the info, Jouni. The upstream bug report mentions commit 136d8f3 as the bad commit. It would be great if you could test that kernel. It can be downloaded from:

Thanks for testing, cariboo907. Your test results seem to confirm what has been reported in the upstream bug. I'll send a message upstream and inquire if commit 136d8f3 should be reverted.

Thanks Joseph. +1 from me reverting this commit in saucy and upstream.

Bugzilla didn't accept this picture.

Please send me the upstream message. I am not subscribed to any kernel mailing lists.

Thanks for the update, Jouni. The bug is fixed by the following commit:

commit c194992cbe71c20bb3623a566af8d11b0bfaa721
Author: Mikulas Patocka <email address hidden>
Date: Thu Sep 19 14:13:17 2013 -0400

    skge: fix broken driver

The commit is in 3.12-rc2, but I don't see that it was cc'd to stable. I sent a message upstream and to the patch author to request inclusion in the stable kernels. I'll build a test kernel with this commit to ensure it resolves this bug. I'll post the kernel shortly.

I built a Saucy test kernel with commit c194992c applied. The kernel can be downloaded from:

Can you test this kernel and post back if it resolves the bug? If it does, I will send an SRU request for the Ubuntu kernel.

I just tried the kernel you linked to, and the problem is resolved. I did get a missing dependency error while trying to install the linux-tools-3.11.0-8-generic package, but the system boots OK and networking works. Thanks for your efforts.
