Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
wxvlc: Depends: vlc (= 0.8.1-1ubuntu7) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libwxgtk2.5.3 (>= 2.5.3.2ubuntu3) but it is not installable
E: Broken packages
[root@oftheother ~]$ apt-get install libwxgtk2.5.3
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Package libwxgtk2.5.3 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package libwxgtk2.5.3 has no installation candidate

Upstream, in Debian-unstable, there is a newer version where the dependencies are all different, and it fixes all the VLC dependency problems in breezy. The problem is that this newer version is in Debian only for i386, ia64, and s390, not amd64 or ppc. I have e-mailed a build fix to the Debian maintainer so that packages may be added for ppc, alpha, mips, and mipsel, but have yet to receive a response. Once the current VLC is installable on Debian-unstable, resynchronizing this with Debian will take care of all related dependency problems on breezy. I have verified this by rebuilding the 0.8.2-1 .deb packages on breezy-ppc and successfully installing them.

0.8.2-1ubuntu2 does not seem to exist.

The latest version according to a freshly reloaded synaptic is 0.8.1-1ubuntu7.

0.8.1-1ubuntu7 is the latest version on Hoary. But on Breezy the version available is 0.8.2-1ubuntu3. My previous comment was for a Breezy system.
