Bug Description

The following window appears during upgrade process:
------------------
Could not calculate the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade:
The package 'update-manager-kde' is marked for removal but it is in the removal blacklist.

 This can be caused by:
 * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
 * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
 * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the command 'ubuntu-bug update-manager' in a terminal.
------------------

After this issue occurred, I could not update or install new applications anymore.

Hi,

I tried to completely remove update-manager-kde manually via synaptic package manager and another popup appears "Mark additional required changes". There's several packages to be marked as removed such as:
alacarte
cryptsetup
evolution
evolution-couchdb
etc

When I do mark them all, and click Apply, another popup appears - "Could not apply changes! Fix broken packages first."

So I'm kind of stuck. I'm not able to upgrade any of my packages normally thru Update Manager and I'm also not able to upgrade my LTS version. I also tried Partial Upgrade option and that didn't work too.

Supposedly phonon-backend-gstreamer cannot be satisfied, so it wants to keep xine except xine can't be kept so it wants to remove all and everything kde including update-manager-kde.

Why backend-gstreamer canot be satisfied is a mystery to me though, from looking at the deps and the apt.log it marked every dependency for installation it appears.

I really think there is a foreign package invovled somewhere.

What happens if you run
sudo apt-get install phonon-backend-gstreamer && sudo apt-get purge phonon-backend-xine

I had this problem upgrading from 13.10 to 14.04. I removed update-manager-kde using the synaptic package manager, and was then able to upgrade the distribution. The only thing I can add here is that my distribution started life without KDE--I installed ubuntu, and then some point later installed KDE using the package manager.
