Bug Description

In the new GLES code, the opengl plugin has a new option "vertex_buffer_object" which is enabled by default. It is optional and rendering works perfectly with or without it.

However with unityshell loaded, it is no longer optional. Disabling vertex_buffer_object makes windows darken quickly until the whole screen is black. And I can't get it back without resetting my compiz settings externally.

Promoted to High. This bug will be a big issue for fglrx users at least until bug 1026920 is fixed or worked around in lp:compiz.

Hmm, not really.

Unity and nux have a hard requirement on vertex buffer objects. It doesn't make sense to be testing codepaths where they are available in unity and not available in compiz. In addition, the users of unity will be using the distro patched compiz which have the detection workaround applied (or we could put that upstream)

I don't understand why Unity/Nux need a hard requirement on the opengl plugin's vertex_buffer_object option. Because GLVertexBuffer works transparently with or without it, at least for all other plugins.

I might be wrong about fglrx. However I just spent half an hour installing an ATI card and fglrx, only to find I can't test it. Stuck on bug 1025098 instead.

This bug could just be a problem in enableLegacyOBSAndRender, which I already know is buggy in the gles2 branch.

This appears to be fixed by the fix for bug 1037408. Fingers crossed.
