This may be related to <http://musescore.org/node/17463> which states changing reverb settings may help which seems to be a problem with the reverb algorithm.
V1.3 was released almost a year ago. I installed from the ppa:mscore-ubuntu/mscore-stable and that improved playback significantly.
I had been seeing 100% CPU and lag and glitches. V1.3 plays same piece at 40% CPU and no glitches.
So the work-around may be to disable reverb. The fix may be for Canonical to update the package to V1.3.

This issue makes playback almost useless, rendering the application significantly impaired and adversely affecting the user experience to the point of them disregarding the application. This is a fantastic application with educational benefit and should be used to showcase Ubuntu, e.g. to schools and colleges as well as armature and professional composers and musicians. It is a shame that it is currently not configured to shine at its best.
Is there anything that can be done (by us the community) to rectify this?

This bug was fixed in the package musescore - 1.3+dfsg-1

---------------
musescore (1.3+dfsg-1) unstable; urgency=low

  * New upstream release
    + see <http://musescore.org/en/musescore-1.3>
    + important bug fixes (Closes: #591908; LP: #1010457)
  * debian/control:
    + update long description for musescore-common
    + depend on mawk not gawk (Closes: #667845)
    + depend on individual libqtscript4 packages rather than the metapackage
      libqtscript4-qtbindings, since -opengl will not install on GNU/Hurd, thereby
      making musescore uninstallable
  * debian/patches:
    + drop 20-fix-dso-linking.patch
    + add 25-build-hurd.patch: add rules to CMakeLists to build on GNU or kFreeBSD
