Do not allow translation of hardware support symbols

The gettext calls on these returned str instead of unicode objects, which
caused a bug in some locals, such as French.
As all translations were using the very same symbols, it seems more logical to
drop the gettext calls than adding new conversions to unicode (which would have
worked too).
