Add some resilience against race conditions taking the bus at startup,
in case another instance starts after the bus has been checked but
before the running instance has a chance to get the bus (LP: #732015).

If that happens, we repeat the "die with a nice message, unless --replace
was given, in which case it takes over" dance. If that isn't successful,
we fail with a nicer error message.
